Meet Our Faculty

Philip D. Buchanan, Ph.D., FACMG
Director and Founder
Dr. Philip D. Buchanan is a Medical Geneticist and Clinical Cytogeneticist certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics. Dr. Buchanan graduated from North Carolina State University. Post-doctoral studies were completed at the University of Michigan, Harvard University and the University of Oregon. He came to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970 to develop the Prenatal Genetics Diagnosis Program. For twelve years he directed the Prenatal Genetic Counseling Clinic and Cytogenetics Laboratory and participated in the Birth Defects treatment Center and the UNC Cancer Research Center. Dr. Buchanan is a member of many professional societies. He routinely presents at international meetings, publishes and serves as reviewer for peer-reviewed journals. In 1983, Dr. Buchanan established GeneCare Medical Genetics Center in Chapel Hill, NC. The Center has a very active international research program. GeneCare provides comprehensive genetic counseling, maternal serum screening and genetic laboratory testing. Dr. Buchanan is the Director of GeneCare Medical Genetics Center and serves as the Chairman of the Board for Capital Analytics.

Karen K. Phillips, Ph.D., FACMG
Director
Dr. Karen Phillips is a Clinical Cytogeneticists certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and by the Canadian Board of Medical Geneticists. She earned her PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also did a Clinical Fellowship in Cytogenetics under Dr. Kathleen Rao. Dr. Phillips was a Cytogenetics Director at LabCorp in Research Triangle Park, NC prior to joining GeneCare in 2002. Her research interests include uniparental disomy and FISH.

Beth Lutz, MS, CGC
Genetic Counselor
Beth Lutz became a part of the GeneCare team in 2004. Beth earned her BS in biological sciences from Oklahoma State University. She went on to receive her MS in genetic counseling from the University of South Carolina. Beth is a native Texan and is happy to be back in Dallas currently working as a Board Certified Genetic Counselor. Her primary research field is prenatal screening, including alternative maternal serum analytes and ultrasound findings.

Tami Kelley, MS
Genetic Counselor
Tami Few earned her BS in Social Science from Saint Gregory's Catholic University and her MS in Genetic Counseling from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Tami joined the GeneCare Medical Genetics Center staff in 2005 and is located in Dallas, TX.
Research and speaking platforms include Predictive Testing for Heritable Disease in Asymptomatic Children: An Ethical Evaluation, Genetics in Clinical Practice, and original research and dissertation on Novel Adult Wilms' Tumor Cell Lines: Cystogenetics, Comparitive Genomic Hybridization Array and Clinical Significance.
